Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement
About this survey:
The BCSSE is a national survey designed to collect data about entering college students’ high school academic and co-curricular experiences and students’ expectations for their first year of college. At UNC Charlotte, this survey was administered in mid-August 2017 to all incoming freshmen.
This survey is composed of items related to 9 engagement indicators:
- Quantitiative Reasoning
- Learning Strategies
- Collaborative Learning
- Student-Faculty Interaction
- Discussions with Diverse Others
- Academic Perseverance
- Acadmic Difficulty
- Academic Preparation
- Importance of Campus Environment

Filter options for the results include the following:
The format for the below descriptions is: Filter name: definition of filter options
College: Students can be affiliated with academic programs in the College of Arts and Architecture, the Belk College of Business, the College of Computing and Informatics, the Cato College of Education, the William States Lee College of Engineering, the College of Health and Human Services, or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. College affiliation was determined by Banner records in Spring 2018.
Resident Status: In-State (NC) resident (R) or out-of-state/ non-resident (N) for admissions and tuition purposes.
Gender: Male or Female
Race/Ethnicity: African American, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, International, Muliple, Pacific Islander, Unknown, or White as determined by Banner records.
GPA: Students’ semester GPA on a 4.0 scale at the end of their first semester at UNC Charlotte (Fall 2017), as determined by Banner records, grouped into categorical bins (e.g., 3.0 to 3.5).
First Generation Status: Students self-reported information on the BCSSE survey about their parental educational attainment recoded into “Either parent/guardian holds a bachelor’s degree” or “Neither parent/guardian holds a bachelor’s degree”.
Some pages contain additional filter options:
Type of High School: Home school, Public, ‘Private, not religiously-affiliated’, ‘Private, religiously-affiliated’ Other (GED, etc.)
High School Grades: Students’ self-report whether most of their high school grades were A+,A,A-,B+,B,B-,C+,C,C-, or if grades were not used in their high school curriculum.
SAT/ Act Composite Scores: Students’ combined SAT Math & Reading scores or ACT composite scores, recoded into categories of “900 or lower, “901-1000”, “1001-1100”, “1101-1200”, “1201-1300”, “1301-1400”, “1401-1600”.
SAT Math: Based on survey respondents’ self-reported SAT Math scores, the mean and standard deviation of these scores were calculated. Student’s SAT scores were then categorized into Below Average (more than 1 standard deviation below the mean), Average (within 1 standard deviation, plus or minus, from the mean), Above Average (more than 1 standard deviation above the mean).
SAT Reading & Writing: Based on survey respondents’ self-reported SAT Reading & Writing scores, the mean and standard deviation of these scores were calculated. Student’s SAT scores were then categorized into Below Average (more than 1 standard deviation below the mean), Average (within 1 standard deviation, plus or minus, from the mean), Above Average (more than 1 standard deviation above the mean).
ACT: Composite: Based on survey respondents’ self-reported ACT scores, the mean and standard deviation of these scores were calculated. Student’s scores were then categorized into Below Average (more than 1 standard deviation below the mean), Average (within 1 standard deviation, plus or minus, from the mean), Above Average (more than 1 standard deviation above the mean).
